I would do bad bad things for an E31...

Me too, I figure my E32 will be a good learning experience before I try for an E31.

That portly man next to the Ferrari would be Froilán González, the driver that gave Ferrari its first GP win. The other guy is Mr Vignale himself.
The building in the background is Vignale’s facilities in Turin.

Time has been kind to the 8-series. Its looks are lovely and nowadays that’s enough for it to endear itself to us. The car had serious weight and size issues, however (apart from being way overcomplicated). A senior BMW executive once privately described it to me as “that wardrobe of a car”.
It was too much of everything and had too much of fancy everything - a typical OTT product, as envisioned by Wolfgang “Niven” Reitzle.

That flying Caudron replica looks amazing. I didn’t know that such existed.

I guess it was just ahead of its time, as all new BMWs are oversized and overcomplicated now. Its good looks definitely cover up its shortcomings to people who don’t have experience with that model.

You are so right. In my opinion BMW has lost the plot completely (to my eyes, at least). And the looks of its cars - well, I find them absolutely underwhelming.
It’s funny how things evolve. At the time the 8-series cars, in particular the V12 version, were a big white elephant (both to BMW and to their owners; to add insult to injury, a conspicuous percentage of those were footballers). Now it has acquired a certain suave charm (of which the
überkitschig
Z8, the modern equivalent of a fake Tudor mansion, is absolutely devoid).

To be honest I started researching the picture because I thought I had recognised González, so finding about Mr Vignale in it was a nice surprise. Lots of interesting stuff about that car (and others) here:
http://coachbuild.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=3840&start=0
So the car started as a 166 “Mille Miglia” with an open barchetta body by Touring, then González commissioned a berlinetta body from Vignale (also with a bigger “212" engine in it). Interestingly González said years later the car was never intended for him but for Perón; maybe he was used as a proxy.
It seems now it has gone back to the old open-top bodywork...

Forgot to say, nice .gif of a Stratos (although I suspect that one could be a replica?). They were notoriously inadequate for forest stages or mud but that did not prevent Lancia from trying (they took it to the Safari, even).
This is a beautiful image (cribbed shamelessly from here:

) of Björn Waldegaard during the 1975 RAC Rally:
He was going to be disqualified anyway (no rear lights at all, no reg plate etc) but he gave his all nonetheless.
